Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND)
The IND implements the foreign nationals policy in the Netherlands. This means that the IND assesses all residence applications of people who wish to live in the Netherlands or who want to become a Dutch citizen. These may include refugees who are not safe in their own country and who therefore apply for asylum here. Or, people who want to work here, study or form a family with someone who is already living here. In addition, the IND handles naturalisation applications from people who have lived here for so long that they regard themselves as Dutch citizens and therefore wish to apply for a Dutch passport. The IND is part of the Ministry of Justice and Security.
Repatriation and Departure Service (DT&V)
The DT&V partner in the chain oversees the departure of foreign nationals who are not allowed to stay in the Netherlands. The foreign nationals are personally responsible for leaving the Netherlands. DT&V holds meetings with foreign nationals to encourage their return to their country of origin. When foreign nationals are not prepared to leave the country voluntarily the DT&V reviews the options available for forced departure.
Aliens Police Department, Identification and Human Trafficking (AVIM)
Asylum seekers are obliged to report on a regular basis. AVIM carries this out. In cooperation with the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee, the AVIM is responsible for the supervision on asylum seekers e.g. during their stay in the Netherlands. When a positive decision is taken, the residence document will be handed over by staff members of the AVIM. In case an asylum application has been definitely rejected, the AVIM has a part in the departure of the asylum seeker.
Royal Netherlands Marechaussee (KMar)
The KMar ensures the lawfulness of entry into the Netherlands and lawful residence of foreign nationals.
